In the glass, the 2021 Hattenheim Engelmannsberg dry presents a delicate yellow color with golden reflections. The nose is initially dominated by aromas of yellow fruits, which are paired with exotic hints of passion fruit, kiwi, lime and a touch of lemon balm. The fine citrus aromas are picked up again on the palate and accompanied by a pinch of fleur de sel and an exciting minerality. The firm texture in combination with the elegant, well-integrated acidity rounds off the overall picture of the 2021 Hattenheim Engelmannsberg trocken excellently and gives it a gripping drinking flow.

Balthazar Ress founded his eponymous Rheingau wine estate in 1870 and today it is run by Stefan and Christian Ress who oversee a total 46 hectares of vineyards throughout the region. Compared to the precipitous slopes of the Mosel the Rheingau is quite gentle in its aspect and the Rhine River has a moderating effect on the microclimate in the vineyards. Some 90% of the Balthazar Ress vineyards are planted to Riesling with the remainder split between Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). There is great purity and sense of place throughout the Balthazar Ress range, in particular the Grand Cru and single vineyard offerings.

Riesling is a white wine grape variety that is grown in many regions around the world, but it is particularly associated with Germany and Alsace, France. Riesling wines are known for their high acidity, minerality and a wide range of styles. They can range from dry and crisp with green apple, citrus, and mineral notes to sweet and honeyed with flavors of apricot, peach, and nectarine. The sweetness level in Riesling depends on the ripeness of the grapes, and winemakers can choose to make dry, off-dry, or sweet styles.
Riesling wines are considered to be very versatile, they pair well with a wide range of foods, particularly seafood, sushi, and spicy Asian cuisine, as well as a wide range of cheeses.
Riesling wines are known for their aging potential, and many high-quality German Rieslings can be aged for many years and still retain their complexity, balance, and freshness. It's also worth mentioning that the grape is known for its ability to express the terroir, meaning that Riesling wines from different regions can taste quite different from one another, even from one side of a mountain to the other.
