Since 1889, five generations of the Valdemar Family have produced some of the finest wines from Rioja. It was Joaquín Martínez Bujanda who started the company with 10 hectares of vines in Rioja Alavesa and over the years the estate has expanded to include some of the best vineyards across the region. Chosen as one of the 5 Best Wine Cellars of Rioja by Wine & Spirits magazine their Conde Valdemar range of wines includes the crisp, energetic Viura white and a selection of beautifully made Tempranillo from Crianza to Reserva and the top-of-the-range Gran Reserva, a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Maturana from the family vineyards in Rioja.

Tempranillo Blanco is a relatively rare and unique white grape variety, a mutation of the well-known red Tempranillo grape, originating from the Rioja region in Spain. Discovered in a vineyard in the late 20th century, Tempranillo Blanco has since garnered attention for its intriguing profile and potential. Wines made from Tempranillo Blanco typically exhibit a bright, pale yellow color and an aromatic bouquet that can include notes of green apple, pear, citrus fruits, and white flowers. These wines often have a crisp acidity, medium body, and a fresh, lively character on the palate. The flavor profile can also include subtle hints of tropical fruits like pineapple and melon, adding to the wine's overall complexity and appeal.
In winemaking, Tempranillo Blanco benefits from modern techniques aimed at preserving its fresh and vibrant character. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks is common to maintain the purity of its fruit flavors, though some producers experiment with oak aging to introduce additional layers of complexity and texture. Tempranillo Blanco wines are generally enjoyed young to appreciate their bright and zesty qualities, but some examples can develop more depth and nuance with a few years of bottle aging. As a relatively new addition to the world of white wines, Tempranillo Blanco continues to capture the interest of wine enthusiasts and producers alike, showcasing the versatility and innovation within the Rioja region and beyond.
